Utah Jazz vs Memphis Grizzlies Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026

Utah visits Memphis on Wednesday for an opener featuring two teams that look different from the groups that struggled last season. Jaren Jackson Jr. returns to face his former team, while the Grizzlies begin their first full season after moving on from Ja Morant. Tipoff at FedExForum is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET. Memphis is favored by 1.5 points, with our reference total at 241.5. I’m taking Utah with the points and looking under the total.

Utah Has Scoring Options, but the Defense Has to Catch Up

Utah finished 22-60 last season and went 8-33 on the road. That road record deserves attention before backing the Jazz away from home. Utah split its four meetings with Memphis, though, and there is enough established scoring on this roster to make a short underdog interesting. The Jazz don’t need to solve every problem from last season Wednesday. They need to defend well enough that their offensive talent gets a chance to decide a close game.

The Jazz averaged 117.6 points while allowing 126.0 last season. That tells you where the trouble was. Scoring becomes a much harder assignment when the opponent gets comfortable opportunities on consecutive possessions. Utah needs better resistance at the point of attack and quicker decisions from the help defenders. Bringing a second player toward the ball accomplishes little if the next pass finds somebody completely unattended. Memphis should have to finish possessions against a defender rather than simply move the ball until an uncontested shot appears.

Lauri Markkanen averaged 26.7 points and 6.9 rebounds across 42 games last season. Keyonte George supplied 23.6 points and 6.1 assists in 54 appearances, while Jackson averaged 19.4 points across his season with Memphis and Utah. George gives the Jazz a creator who can draw attention before finding their scoring forwards. Jackson also offers a different interior defensive option than Utah had for much of last season. Jusuf Nurkic has been listed out with a foot injury, while Kyle Filipowski has carried a back-related day-to-day designation. Those frontcourt concerns make defensive rebounding and foul trouble particularly relevant.

Memphis Needs Its Young Creators to Make Good Decisions

Memphis went 25-57 last season. In games played at FedExForum, the Grizzlies finished 13-27; that arena-specific figure excludes neutral-site games. The home floor offers a small advantage Wednesday, but it doesn’t erase the work this team still has ahead of it. Moving Morant to Portland changed the offense’s responsibilities. Memphis needs its available guards to organize possessions without relying on the same individual threat to bend the defense.

The Grizzlies averaged 114.7 points and allowed 120.7 last season. They also surrendered 46.8 rebounds per game. That last issue could matter when Markkanen or Jackson draws a defender away from the basket. Memphis needs everybody involved in finishing the possession. A good initial contest won’t mean much if Utah retrieves the miss and finds an open shooter before the coverage resets. Offensively, the Grizzlies should attack Utah’s perimeter coverage, but they cannot let a promising drive become a forced shot against multiple defenders.

Cedric Coward averaged 13.6 points and 5.9 rebounds in 62 games last season. Cam Spencer contributed 11.1 points and 5.6 assists over 72 appearances, giving Memphis a useful passing option as its younger players assume more responsibility. Jerami Grant arrives after averaging 18.6 points for Portland, although he has appeared on preliminary day-to-day listings. Isaiah Stewart is out with an ankle injury, and GG Jackson has also carried an ankle-related day-to-day designation. Stewart’s absence removes a physical interior option against Utah’s frontcourt.

Where This Game Could Swing

Matchup Why It Matters
George creating against Memphis’s perimeter coverage Utah needs penetration that produces clean opportunities for its scoring forwards.
Jackson defending near the basket Better interior resistance could make Utah’s defensive possessions less forgiving for Memphis.
Memphis finishing defensive possessions Utah’s size could create second chances when the initial shot misses.
Both teams protecting the ball Live-ball turnovers could turn a high total into a much easier target.

Utah Jazz vs Memphis Grizzlies Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Utah Jazz +1.5

Give me Utah with the points. George can create the first advantage, while Markkanen and Jackson give him established scoring options when Memphis brings help. Stewart’s absence also leaves the Grizzlies with one fewer interior answer. I’m not dismissing Utah’s road problems or pretending its defense has suddenly become dependable. Memphis can win this by attacking the guards, forcing help and making Utah defend the next pass. Grant’s availability could strengthen that argument. I still prefer the Jazz’s collection of established scorers in a game priced this close. Utah is my projected outright winner, and +1.5 provides a little protection if the last possession goes the other way.

Total Pick: Under 241.5

I’m taking the under, although neither team’s previous defensive performance makes it comfortable. The case depends on the number and the offensive work Memphis now has to distribute after Morant’s departure. Some possessions should require more passes and more time before a good opportunity develops. Utah also has enough scoring size to attack specific matchups rather than race into the first available jumper. The danger is easy to identify: missed rotations, offensive rebounds and careless turnovers could produce points without either offense executing especially well. Frontcourt absences could make that worse. Even allowing for those problems, I have Utah winning 120-117. That leaves the projected total below 241.5 without requiring an unusually low-scoring game.
