Cleveland opens its season Thursday against a Philadelphia team that already spoiled New York’s championship celebration. The Cavaliers visit Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a 7:00 p.m. ET tipoff on ESPN. Philadelphia is favored by 2.5 points, with the total at 235.5. Cleveland swept last season’s four meetings, but the Sixers have changed considerably since then. I’m taking Philadelphia to cover the short number and looking under the total.

Cleveland Has Enough Offense to Make This Uncomfortable
Cleveland enters 0-0 overall and 0-0 on the road after finishing 52-30 last season. The Cavaliers won all four regular-season meetings with Philadelphia, including two victories in this building. That deserves some weight. It also deserves context, because the Sixers have added several important pieces. Cleveland cannot assume the same defensive approach will produce the same results against a different collection of scorers.
The Cavaliers averaged 119.5 points and allowed 115.4 last season, giving them a plus-4.1 scoring margin. Their 48.2% shooting was considerably better than Philadelphia’s 46.2%. Cleveland can make this game difficult by moving the ball, getting into the paint and forcing the Sixers to defend a second action. The concern is at the other end. Opponents shot 37.2% from three against Cleveland last season. Giving Philadelphia comfortable perimeter opportunities would make this short underdog number much harder to protect.
Donovan Mitchell averaged 27.9 points and 5.7 assists last season, while James Harden supplied 23.6 points and 8.0 assists. That gives Cleveland two established creators when a possession gets stuck. The interior situation needs attention. Jarrett Allen, who averaged 15.4 points and 8.5 rebounds, is questionable with right patellar tendinopathy on the NBA’s October 21 evening report. Khalifa Diop and Nae’Qwan Tomlin are out. If Allen cannot play, Cleveland loses an efficient finishing target and an important rebounder while its reserve frontcourt is already short.
Philadelphia Won Without Shooting Particularly Well
Philadelphia is 1-0 overall and 0-0 at home after Tuesday’s 106-100 victory at New York. Last season’s team finished 45-37, but the opening game gave us a first competitive look at this version of the Sixers. Beating the defending champions on the road is a useful start. Doing it while shooting just 41.6% from the field and 27.5% from three is more interesting than the result alone.
The Sixers held New York to 37.2% shooting, which helped them survive their own misses. They also lost the rebounding count 53-45 and surrendered 14 offensive boards. That is the part I would worry about against Cleveland. Philadelphia cannot keep giving capable opponents extra attempts and expect its defense to clean everything up. Last season’s averages of 115.9 points scored and 116.1 allowed provide background, but they should carry less weight after the roster changes. Tuesday’s defensive effort was encouraging; one game does not establish that it will last.
Tyrese Maxey led the opening win with 28 points. Jaylen Brown added 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while LeBron James finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Those contributions show why Philadelphia has more ways to recover when its first offensive action fails. Joel Embiid added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Frontcourt depth remains a concern: Dominick Barlow, Tacko Fall and Ariel Hukporti are out, while Dean Wade is questionable. Philadelphia needs its available big men to finish defensive possessions.

The historical comparison is context, not a predictive model. Philadelphia’s roster changes make direct comparisons with last season less reliable.
Three Matchups Worth Watching
| Matchup | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Philadelphia’s creators against Cleveland’s perimeter defense | The Sixers have several options to attack a favorable matchup late in possessions. |
| Cleveland’s available frontcourt against Philadelphia’s rebounding | Allen’s status could change the balance inside. |
| Philadelphia’s defensive rebounding | Allowing repeated attempts would undermine both the home favorite and the under. |
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Philadelphia 76ers Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Philadelphia 76ers -2.5
I’ll lay the 2.5 with Philadelphia. The Sixers won Tuesday despite poor perimeter shooting, and their additional creators give them options when Cleveland takes away the first look. Allen’s uncertain status also matters against a team that can put pressure on the interior. There is a clear argument for Cleveland: it had the better scoring margin last season, swept the matchup and has enough guard play to win outright. Philadelphia’s rebounding is another concern. I still prefer the home team at this price because it can get useful offense from several places without needing one player to carry every important possession. My projection is a four-point Sixers win, so I would be less interested if the spread moves substantially higher.
Total Pick: Under 235.5
The under is my stronger preference here, although the margin is modest. Cleveland’s games averaged 234.9 combined points last season, while Philadelphia’s averaged 232.0. Both sit below this number, and I expect enough possessions to require a second or third action to keep the scoring manageable. Tuesday showed Philadelphia could win a game through defensive stops while its own shooting struggled. The counterargument is straightforward: Cleveland scored nearly 120 points per game last season, and Philadelphia has added considerable offensive talent. Frontcourt absences could also create easier finishes. I’m projecting Philadelphia 117, Cleveland 113, which gives us 230 points and room below 235.5.
