Portland Has Several Ways to Create a Good Possession

Portland enters Friday at 1-0 after beating Phoenix 124-83 at home Wednesday. This is the Trail Blazers’ first road game, giving them a 0-0 road record entering Sacramento. Portland scored the first 21 points of the opener and led 43-12 after one quarter. That made the result comfortable almost immediately, but Friday presents a different test: building an advantage without relying on another extraordinary start.

The encouraging part of Portland’s offense was the variety. Damian Lillard supplied perimeter shooting, Ja Morant created opportunities with the ball, and Deni Avdija contributed as both a scorer and rebounder. That combination can make Sacramento defend more than one threat during a possession. Portland should benefit if it moves the ball after the first defensive rotation instead of settling for a difficult early jumper. Its own defensive priority is limiting Sacramento’s clean looks without creating unnecessary fouls.

Lillard finished with 25 points and six assists, making six of 10 three-point attempts. Avdija added 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Morant produced 14 points and eight assists. Toumani Camara also scored 18. Those contributions explain why Portland did not need one player to dominate the ball all night. The latest checked official injury report listed Shaedon Sharpe out following right meniscus surgery, Branden Carlson out in concussion protocol and Chris Youngblood out with left ankle soreness.

Sacramento Needs Better Support Around LaVine and Sabonis

Sacramento is 0-1 after losing 121-96 at the Clippers on Wednesday. Friday is the Kings’ home opener, so their home record remains 0-0. Returning to Golden 1 Center offers a chance to reset, but Sacramento needs more than a better start emotionally. The Kings must improve the quality of their possessions and make Portland work harder for its offense.

The Clippers shot 52.4% from the field and 40.0% from three against Sacramento. Allowing that efficiency gives an opponent too many ways to build a lead. Portland’s backcourt makes the same issue relevant Friday: aggressive help against Morant can create perimeter opportunities, while staying attached to shooters can leave driving space. Sacramento also needs more dependable shooting around its primary scorers. Keegan Murray and rookie Darius Acuff Jr. combined to make six of 32 shots in the opener, a difficult burden for the rest of the offense to overcome.

Zach LaVine led Sacramento with 28 points on 10-for-19 shooting. Domantas Sabonis added 14 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, making all five of his field-goal attempts. Their production gives Sacramento a credible way to improve without requiring an entirely different approach. Malik Monk was listed as probable with left ankle soreness on the NBA’s October 22, 8:15 p.m. ET report, which could help the secondary offense. Dylan Cardwell, Maxime Raynaud and Ben Simmons were listed out.

Where This Game Gets Decided

Matchup Why It Matters
Ja Morant’s penetration vs Sacramento’s help defense Portland can create efficient offense if its drives force multiple defenders to commit.
Damian Lillard’s shooting vs Sacramento’s perimeter coverage The Kings must challenge outside attempts without opening easy driving lanes.
Domantas Sabonis’ passing vs Portland’s off-ball defense Sacramento needs cuts and movement to turn his touches into productive team offense.
Sacramento’s secondary scorers vs Portland’s defensive attention Improved support around LaVine and Sabonis would make the Kings more competitive against the spread.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Sacramento Kings Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Portland Trail Blazers -6.5

Portland -6.5 remains the recorded pick from our original slate. I prefer the Trail Blazers’ range of offensive options against a Sacramento defense that struggled to contain the Clippers. Morant can force help, Lillard can punish space outside, and Avdija gives Portland another player who can finish or keep the possession moving. The counterargument is that Sacramento’s poor shooting around LaVine and Sabonis should not automatically repeat, particularly at home. Monk’s probable availability could also make the Kings harder to contain. I still project Portland to win 119-109. That supports a smaller lean at the latest -7.5, but the original -6.5 offers the better margin for a competitive fourth quarter.

Total Pick: Under 232.5

I’m taking under 232.5, with more caution than the opening results alone might suggest. Portland holding Phoenix to 83 does not establish an elite defense, and Sacramento has enough offensive talent to improve substantially on 96 points. My under argument is that the Kings still need to demonstrate consistent scoring beyond their primary options, while Portland can win without maintaining its opening-night shooting. The biggest threat is an open game where Morant creates transition opportunities and Sacramento answers before the defense gets set. A return from Monk would also improve the Kings’ scoring options. My projection totals 228 points, leaving 4.5 points below the number. Portland’s spread remains my preferred selection.
