Minnesota Has More to Build On Than a Hot Shooting Night

Minnesota enters 1-0 overall and 1-0 on the road after Wednesday’s 131-106 victory at Miami. The Timberwolves finished 49-33 last season, including 23-18 away from home, so winning on the road is not unfamiliar territory. Still, the opener should be kept in perspective. Minnesota had an exceptional shooting performance, and Friday’s pick cannot depend on the same accuracy showing up again. The more useful question is whether the Wolves can keep creating good possessions when their jumpers cool.

The Timberwolves made 21 three-pointers against Miami and won the rebounding battle 52-34. Those numbers worked together: Minnesota finished defensive possessions and then had room to attack without constantly retrieving the ball after a score. Orlando will test that interior work differently. The Magic scored 125 against Atlanta and created offense through their frontcourt. Minnesota needs to defend without unnecessary help, stay attached to shooters and avoid turning Orlando’s misses into second chances.

Anthony Edwards scored 45 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the opener, making nine of 17 threes. LaMelo Ball added 21 points and six assists, while Rudy Gobert collected 15 rebounds. Edwards supplied the scoring burst, but Ball’s creation and Gobert’s work on the glass give Minnesota other ways to control possessions. Donte DiVincenzo remains out following right Achilles tendon repair, according to the NBA’s October 22, 4:45 p.m. ET injury report. His absence reduces the available perimeter rotation, making disciplined minutes from the remaining guards important.

Orlando Has Enough Offense, but the Stops Were Missing

Orlando is 0-1 overall and 0-1 at home after losing 132-125 to Atlanta on Wednesday. The Magic finished 45-37 last season, but their opener showed why scoring alone will not settle this matchup. Orlando worked its way back into the game and still could not close it out. Minnesota presents another opponent capable of punishing a brief defensive lapse. The Magic need a more complete effort rather than another stretch of offense that leaves too much work for the final minutes.

The Hawks shot 48.9% from the field, made 14 threes and converted 30 free throws against Orlando. That is a difficult combination to overcome even when the Magic’s offense is productive. Better closeouts would help, but Orlando also needs to defend without fouling and keep Minnesota from moving easily between the perimeter and the paint. At the other end, the Magic should make the Wolves defend several actions. Quick, contested jumpers would give Minnesota an easier route to the defensive rebounds it collected so effectively at Miami.

Paolo Banchero scored 35 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added seven rebounds and 10 assists against Atlanta. Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. supplied 22 points apiece. That production shows why Orlando can remain dangerous even if Banchero’s shooting returns to a more ordinary level. Availability limits the supporting options, though. Anthony Black, Jonathan Isaac, Izaiyah Nelson and Noah Penda are listed out on the official afternoon report. Those absences reduce Orlando’s flexibility for handling ball pressure and changing its defensive matchups.

Scoring Measure Combined Points

Orlando’s opening game 257

Our projected total 235

The opening results do not support an under by themselves. Our selection depends on less efficient shooting and better defensive execution than Orlando showed Wednesday.

Three Matchups Worth Watching

Matchup Why It Matters
Minnesota’s perimeter creation against Orlando’s available defenders The Magic need to make Edwards and Ball work without leaving easy opportunities elsewhere.
Banchero’s passing against Minnesota’s help defense Overcommitting to his scoring could open productive shots for Orlando’s supporting players.
Defensive rebounding and fouls Extra possessions and free throws could undermine Minnesota’s control and push the total higher.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Orlando Magic Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves -1.5

Minnesota -1.5 remains our designated best bet for the slate. I’m not expecting another nine-three-pointer night from Edwards. The argument is that Minnesota can win through more than shooting: Ball can organize the offense, Gobert can finish defensive possessions, and the Wolves only need a two-point victory at this number. Orlando’s missing rotation players also make its defensive adjustments harder. The counterargument is substantial. Banchero just combined efficient scoring with 10 assists, and the Magic have enough offense to win this at home. Minnesota’s opening three-point advantage could disappear quickly. I still prefer the Wolves to get enough stops in a competitive second half. My projection is Minnesota 120, Orlando 115.

Total Pick: Under 237.5

The under is the smaller preference. Both teams scored at least 125 in their openers, so there is no reason to present this as an obvious defensive matchup. I’m expecting Minnesota’s shooting to come down from its Miami performance and Orlando to defend more carefully after sending Atlanta to the line repeatedly. The Wolves’ rebounding also gives them a way to limit second chances without needing turnovers on every possession. The risks are Orlando’s offensive creation, another strong Minnesota shooting night and a close finish with repeated free throws. Our projection of 235 offers only a modest cushion. I prefer the side and would not automatically follow the under if the total drops several points.
