The Doosan Bears travel to Incheon to face the SSG Landers on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Incheon SSG Landers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. KST, with SPOTV carrying the game. Doosan enters the matchup at 61-55-4, sitting fifth in the KBO standings, while SSG comes home at 50-66-5. Despite the substantial difference in overall records, Friday’s starting pitching matchup makes this considerably more interesting than the standings suggest.
Doosan has also controlled the season series, winning seven of the first 12 meetings against SSG. The Bears carry the better overall pitching numbers into Friday with a 3.65 team ERA compared with SSG’s 5.38 mark. SSG, however, has substantially more home-run power, holding a 125-93 advantage in homers. More importantly for this particular matchup, the Landers have their best current starting pitcher on the mound.

Starting Pitchers
Doosan will start Park Shin-ji, while SSG counters with Pedro Avila. Park enters with a 5.70 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through 30 innings, recording 25 strikeouts against 14 walks while allowing three home runs. He has appeared 19 times but has made only one start, which creates another question about how deeply Doosan can realistically expect him to work Friday. Avila presents an enormous contrast. The SSG right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through 49 innings, striking out 53 while walking 17. He has made eight starts and recorded seven quality starts while remarkably allowing zero home runs.
Avila’s recent performance makes those season numbers even more convincing. He threw seven scoreless innings against KIA on August 29, allowing only four hits and one walk. That followed seven innings against KT, seven scoreless against LG and six innings without an earned run against Lotte. Across those four outings, Avila worked 27 innings and allowed only three earned runs, giving SSG the type of starting-pitching advantage that can overcome its weaker season-long numbers.
Doosan Looks to Stop a Three-Game Slide
Doosan enters Friday in fifth place at 61-55-4, but recent form has moved in the wrong direction. The Bears have lost three consecutive games and are only 4-6 over their last ten. That puts additional importance on this series because Doosan remains comfortably ahead of SSG in the standings but cannot afford an extended September slide.
The Bears have been the better run-prevention team over the course of the season. Their 3.65 team ERA is dramatically better than SSG’s 5.38 mark, while offensively they carry a .269 team batting average. Doosan has hit 93 home runs and has won seven of the first 12 meetings between these clubs. Those numbers explain why this isn’t an automatic SSG play simply because Avila is starting.
Friday’s concern is how much of Doosan’s normal pitching advantage survives this particular matchup. Park’s 5.70 ERA and limited starting experience put pressure on the Bears’ pitching staff relatively early, while their offense must solve a starter who has allowed nine earned runs all season. If Doosan cannot manufacture something against Avila during the first six or seven innings, the Bears could spend most of the night playing from behind.
SSG Has the Pitching Edge That Matters Friday
SSG’s 50-66-5 record doesn’t make the Landers an obvious team to back against a winning opponent. They sit near the bottom of the standings and have carried one of the KBO’s weaker pitching staffs, with their 5.38 team ERA helping explain why they have struggled to convert their offensive production into more victories.
There is considerably more offensive power here than the record suggests. SSG has hit 125 home runs, 32 more than Doosan, while batting .263 as a team. The Landers therefore don’t necessarily need a huge offensive performance Friday. If Avila delivers another six or seven strong innings, four or five runs could be enough.
That is ultimately why this matchup should be evaluated differently from the teams’ season records. SSG’s weakness has been pitching, but Avila temporarily neutralizes that weakness. His 1.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 53 strikeouts and zero home runs allowed represent elite production through eight KBO starts. Playing at home with that type of starting-pitching advantage gives SSG an opportunity to beat a Doosan team that has lost three straight.
Doosan Bears vs SSG Landers Picks and Prediction
Pick: SSG Landers Moneyline
The SSG Landers moneyline is the best bet. Doosan owns the better record, better season-long team ERA and a 7-5 head-to-head advantage, but Friday’s pitching matchup outweighs those advantages. Avila has recorded seven quality starts in eight appearances and enters with a 1.65 ERA, while Park owns a 5.70 ERA and has made only one start among his 19 appearances. SSG also has the superior home-run profile and gets this matchup at Incheon SSG Landers Field. Rather than asking the ninth-place Landers to suddenly become a better overall team than Doosan, we’re backing their largest individual advantage Friday: Pedro Avila against Park Shin-ji.
Projected score: SSG Landers 5, Doosan Bears 3
Pick: Under 8.5
Under 8.5 is the secondary selection, although the moneyline is considerably stronger. Avila has surrendered only nine earned runs through 49 innings and hasn’t allowed a home run despite facing 196 batters. He has also completed at least six innings in each of his last four starts, giving SSG a realistic opportunity to keep Doosan’s scoring down for most of the game. Park creates more uncertainty on the other side, particularly because he has rarely started, but a projected 5-3 SSG victory still leaves enough room beneath an 8.5 target total. I would play Under 8.5, become more cautious at 8.0 because of the push possibility, and pass if the available total falls to 7.5.
