Denver Nuggets vs Oklahoma City Thunder Picks and Predictions for Thursday October 22 2026

Denver begins its season Thursday against an Oklahoma City team coming home from a convincing win at San Antonio. Tipoff at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Thunder are favored by 8.5 points, with the total at 236.5. Oklahoma City deserves to be favored, but that is a substantial opening-night cushion for a Denver offense with several ways to score. I’m taking the Nuggets with the points and playing under the total.

Denver Has the Offense to Stay Within Reach

Denver enters 0-0 overall and 0-0 on the road after finishing 54-28 last season. The Nuggets were 26-15 away from home, so this is not a team that needs its own building to function. Oklahoma City presents a much harder test than an ordinary road opener, though. Denver needs clean possessions early. A stretch of rushed shots and careless passes could give the Thunder the separation they need before the Nuggets settle into their first regular-season game.

The Nuggets averaged 122.1 points and 29.0 assists last season. That combination matters here because Oklahoma City can make individual scoring difficult. Denver has a chance to answer pressure with passing instead of asking one player to beat a defender repeatedly. The defensive numbers are less comfortable. Denver allowed 116.9 points per game, nine more than Oklahoma City. The Nuggets can cover this spread without winning a defensive contest, but they cannot keep conceding easy scores and expect their offense to repair every mistake.

Nikola Jokic averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists last season. His passing gives Denver a way to attack the help Oklahoma City sends toward the ball. Jamal Murray added 25.4 points and 7.1 assists, giving the Nuggets another creator when Jokic draws extra attention. Denver will be without Julian Strawther because of a left knee sprain. Spencer Jones is questionable with bilateral hamstring injury management on the October 21 evening report. Those absences and uncertainties make the reserve minutes worth watching, especially when Denver’s primary creators rest.

Oklahoma City’s Defense Gives It the Better Starting Point

Oklahoma City is 1-0 overall and 0-0 at home after winning 116-104 at San Antonio on Tuesday. The Thunder finished 64-18 last season, and their opener offered another example of how difficult they can make an opponent’s scoring chances. Thursday brings their home opener and a different challenge. Denver can create offense through its center in ways that force Oklahoma City to defend cuts, screens and passing lanes at the same time.

The Thunder averaged 119.0 points and allowed 107.9 last season, producing a plus-11.1 scoring margin. Denver’s margin was plus-5.2. That difference is why I favor Oklahoma City outright. The Thunder have more room for an ordinary offensive night because their defense can carry possessions. To cover 8.5, however, they need to turn that advantage into a comfortable final margin. Denver’s passing makes that harder if Oklahoma City becomes too aggressive and leaves useful space behind the first defender.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points and 6.6 assists last season. He gives Oklahoma City a dependable scoring option when Denver slows the game and makes the Thunder work in the half court. Chet Holmgren averaged 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks, making his positioning around the basket important against Denver’s cutting and finishing. The official evening report lists Otega Oweh, Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic as out. Oklahoma City’s available frontcourt must defend without unnecessary fouls; losing important interior minutes would make containing Denver’s offense more difficult.

Where This Game Gets Decided

Matchup Why It Matters
Jokic’s passing against Oklahoma City’s help defense Denver needs useful shots when the Thunder pressure its primary options.
Gilgeous-Alexander against Denver’s perimeter coverage Consistent paint pressure could force Denver into fouls and defensive rotations.
Denver’s reserve possessions A poor stretch with the starters resting could turn a competitive game into a comfortable Thunder win.
Turnovers and transition defense Easy baskets would threaten Denver’s cover and the under.

Denver Nuggets vs Oklahoma City Thunder Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Denver Nuggets +8.5

Give me Denver with the 8.5 points. The Nuggets averaged more than 122 points last season and won 26 road games. Their ability to create through Jokic and Murray gives them a reasonable chance to keep scoring when Oklahoma City takes away the first option. I still expect the Thunder to win. Their defensive advantage is substantial, and Denver’s reserve minutes could become a problem against sustained pressure. That is the risk in this pick. I’m backing Denver to keep enough possessions organized to stay within three baskets, rather than asking the Nuggets to control the game. My projection is a six-point Oklahoma City victory, making +8.5 our designated best bet for the October 22 slate.

Total Pick: Under 236.5

I prefer the under because Denver’s scoring average meets a much stronger defense here. Oklahoma City allowed 107.9 points per game last season, and its games averaged 226.9 combined points. Denver’s average game reached 239.0, so the two teams bring very different scoring backgrounds into this matchup. I expect the Thunder to pull Denver below its usual production without completely shutting down its offense. The danger is clear: Denver’s passing can create open shots, while its own defense allowed nearly 117 points per game. A hot shooting night or repeated transition chances could push this over. I’m projecting Oklahoma City 119, Denver 113, putting the game at 232 points.
