Today’s NPB Picks — August 21, 2026
Friday’s NPB schedule contains five games, with three in the Central League and two in the Pacific League. SoftBank and Orix are idle before beginning their weekend series on Saturday.
As usual with NPB, widely available American sportsbook lines can vary significantly or appear late. The totals below should therefore be treated as target betting numbers. If the market moves substantially away from the listed number, the value of the wager changes.
| Game | Side Pick | Total Pick | Best Bet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hiroshima Carp vs Yomiuri Giants | Yomiuri Giants ML | Under 7.5 | No |
| Hanshin Tigers vs Yokohama DeNA BayStars | Hanshin Tigers ML | Under 7.5 | ✅ Yes |
| Tokyo Yakult Swallows vs Chunichi Dragons | Chunichi Dragons ML | Under 7.5 | No |
| Saitama Seibu Lions vs Rakuten Golden Eagles | Saitama Seibu Lions ML | Under 7.5 | No |
| Nippon-Ham Fighters vs Chiba Lotte Marines | Nippon-Ham Fighters ML | Under 7.5 | No |
NPB Best Bet of the Day
Best Bet: Hanshin Tigers ML over Yokohama DeNA BayStars
Hanshin remains the most trustworthy Central League club on this slate. The Tigers were 58-45-1 and leading the Central League entering last weekend, while DeNA was 48-54-3 and sitting well behind the two-team race between Hanshin and Yomiuri. Hanshin’s advantage is built around a substantially more consistent pitching staff and an ability to win close games without needing its offence to explode.
Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Yakult isn’t enough to move me away from the Tigers. Short-term results matter, but I don’t want to overreact to one poor performance when the larger body of work still favours Hanshin. DeNA is also coming off a 6-3 loss to Yomiuri and has been much less dependable against the Central League’s upper tier.
The number matters here. Hanshin is playable at a normal moneyline price, but I would become more cautious if the Tigers are pushed significantly beyond the -150 range. The projected score is Hanshin 4, DeNA 2.
Hiroshima Carp vs Yomiuri Giants Pick
Side Pick: Yomiuri Giants ML
Total Pick: Under 7.5
Yomiuri returns to Tokyo Dome after completing its series at Yokohama with a 6-3 victory Thursday. The Giants entered the second half of August in second place in the Central League and have remained within striking distance of Hanshin. Hiroshima has spent most of the summer at the bottom of the standings and entered last weekend only 39-57-4.
There is some danger in automatically fading Hiroshima because the Carp just beat Chunichi 2-1 Thursday, and they have been capable of dragging opponents into low-scoring games. That is precisely why I prefer pairing Yomiuri with the Under rather than expecting the Giants to win comfortably. Tokyo Dome increases home-run potential, but Hiroshima’s limited offensive production makes it difficult to build a strong Over case.
Yomiuri has simply been the more complete club over the course of the season. The Giants were already 56-47-2 by August 14 compared with Hiroshima’s 39-57-4, a gap too large to ignore. Take Yomiuri ML, with Under 7.5 as the total. Under 7.0 remains playable, but I would pass at 6.5.
Projected score: Yomiuri Giants 4, Hiroshima Carp 2
Hanshin Tigers vs Yokohama DeNA BayStars Pick
Side Pick: Hanshin Tigers ML
Total Pick: Under 7.5
Hanshin travels to Yokohama after Thursday’s disappointing 4-1 loss to Yakult. The Tigers remain the side I trust more because their season-long pitching profile and overall consistency separate them from DeNA. Hanshin was 58-45-1 through August 14, while the BayStars were 48-54-3.
This also looks like another game where run prevention should decide the outcome. DeNA has enough offence to punish mistakes at Yokohama Stadium, but the BayStars have struggled to put together sustained stretches of winning baseball. Against a Hanshin staff built to prevent big innings, asking DeNA to score four or five runs is asking quite a bit.
The Tigers don’t need a huge offensive night for this bet to cash. If they can get into the middle innings with a lead, their pitching depth gives them the stronger closing profile. Hanshin ML is my strongest side wager Friday, while Under 7.5 is playable as a secondary selection.
Projected score: Hanshin Tigers 4, Yokohama DeNA BayStars 2
Tokyo Yakult Swallows vs Chunichi Dragons Pick
Side Pick: Chunichi Dragons ML
Total Pick: Under 7.5
This is the most uncomfortable side on Friday’s card, but Chunichi gets the nod because the game is being played at Vantelin Dome. The Dragons have been significantly better at home than on the road this season. Earlier in August, Chunichi was 27-25 at home while only 14-32 away, one of the largest venue splits in NPB.
Yakult arrives with some momentum after beating Hanshin 4-1 Thursday. That result deserves respect, and it keeps this from being anything close to a best bet. Yet the move from hitter-friendly environments into Vantelin Dome changes the scoring expectation considerably. Chunichi’s most viable path throughout the season has been limiting opponents and turning games into late-inning coin flips.
That’s why Under 7.5 may actually be stronger than the Dragons side. Seven is still acceptable, but 6.5 would be too restrictive unless the final pitching matchup provides additional support. I’ll take Chunichi to grind out a narrow home victory.
Projected score: Chunichi Dragons 3, Tokyo Yakult Swallows 2
Saitama Seibu Lions vs Rakuten Golden Eagles Pick
Side Pick: Saitama Seibu Lions ML
Total Pick: Under 7.5
This matchup requires separating recent head-to-head history from overall team quality. Rakuten won three straight meetings against Seibu in June, beating the Lions 8-7, 8-4 and 2-0. That is a legitimate warning sign for anybody looking to lay a heavy price with Seibu.
The larger season picture, though, still favours the Lions. Seibu entered August among the Pacific League’s strongest clubs and was 55-43-3 through August 6, while Rakuten has spent much of the year near the bottom of the league. Seibu has also demonstrated a far more dependable ability to prevent runs, including a 7-0 shutout of Lotte last Friday despite having to make an emergency pitching change.
Rakuten’s home field and previous success against Seibu keep this from being a best bet, but I still prefer the Lions if the moneyline remains reasonable. The total is interesting as well. Rather than assuming June’s two high-scoring games repeat, I’m leaning toward a more typical Pacific League pitching battle and taking Under 7.5.
Projected score: Saitama Seibu Lions 4, Rakuten Golden Eagles 2
Nippon-Ham Fighters vs Chiba Lotte Marines Pick
Side Pick: Nippon-Ham Fighters ML
Total Pick: Under 7.5
Friday’s Pacific League matchup at ZOZO Marine Stadium has one of the better Under profiles of the day. Lotte is scheduled to start Kazuya Ojima, who was 4-7 with an ERA in the mid-3.00s entering the latter part of August. Nippon-Ham counters with Kohei Arihara, giving the Fighters an experienced starter in a matchup where keeping the ball in the park becomes especially important.
Nippon-Ham has also been the superior team across the full season. The Fighters were 57-45 through August 6 and battling Seibu behind SoftBank, while Lotte was hovering around the .500 mark. Earlier in the season, Nippon-Ham had also taken ten of sixteen meetings with Lotte, giving the Fighters another matchup edge.
The concern is that ZOZO Marine can create unusual conditions when the wind is blowing out, so the weather should always be checked before making a large Under investment there. In normal conditions, however, the pitching matchup and Nippon-Ham’s overall advantage make Fighters ML and Under 7.5 the preferred combination. Under 7.0 is still acceptable; at 6.5, I would pass.
Projected score: Nippon-Ham Fighters 4, Chiba Lotte Marines 2

How to Bet NPB Games
NPB betting is similar to Major League Baseball, with the three most common wagers being the moneyline, run line, and game total.
A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win the game outright. It’s the most straightforward betting option and is popular among both new and experienced bettors.
A run line works like a point spread. Favorites are typically required to win by more than one run, while underdogs receive a 1.5-run cushion. This market often provides better value but comes with additional risk.
A total bet focuses on the combined number of runs scored by both teams. Evaluating pitching matchups, bullpen depth, offensive production, and recent scoring trends can help identify value on the over or under.
What We Consider When Making NPB Picks
Our NPB predictions are based on a combination of starting pitching, bullpen reliability, recent offensive production, current team form, home and road performance, lineup news when available, matchup history, and betting market value.
Rather than automatically backing favorites, we look for opportunities where the odds offer long-term value. Because betting lines can move throughout the day, it’s always worth checking the latest numbers before placing a wager.
NPB Betting Tips
Successful NPB betting requires patience and discipline. Even the league’s strongest teams lose regularly, while underdogs can present value when the betting market overreacts.
Keeping your bet sizes consistent, comparing odds across sportsbooks, and tracking your results throughout the season are all habits that can help improve long-term performance. The goal isn’t to win every game—it’s to consistently find value over the course of the season.
Responsible Gambling Reminder
Sports betting should always be treated as entertainment rather than guaranteed income. Only wager what you can comfortably afford to lose, never chase losses, and take a break if betting stops being enjoyable. Responsible bankroll management is one of the most important parts of long-term betting success.
