Atlanta Has Enough Scoring to Survive an Uneven Night

Atlanta enters 1-0 overall and 1-0 on the road after Wednesday’s 132-125 victory at Orlando. The Hawks had to respond after the Magic made a strong third-quarter push, and their late perimeter shooting supplied the answer. Winning that way is encouraging, but allowing 125 points makes it difficult to call the performance complete. Atlanta showed it could recover when the game turned against it. Friday’s challenge is to avoid needing quite so much scoring to finish the job.

The Hawks shot 48.9% from the field and made 14 of 36 three-pointers, a 38.9% rate. They also converted 30 of 36 free throws. Those are several different ways to keep an offense moving, which matters if Charlotte takes away the first option. Atlanta cannot expect the same free-throw volume every night, though. It also committed 17 turnovers. Better ball security would help protect a small road spread, while fewer defensive fouls would make it harder for Charlotte to manufacture points when its shooting slows.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 31 points, making five of eight threes and 10 of 13 free throws. Jalen Johnson added 20 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, giving Atlanta production beyond its perimeter shooting. Johnson’s rebounding and creation matter if Charlotte forces a less comfortable offensive game. Neither Atlanta nor Charlotte had submitted its official game injury report in the NBA’s October 22, 4:45 p.m. ET release. The pick therefore needs a final availability check rather than an assumption that everyone who played Wednesday will be available again.

Charlotte Can Make Atlanta Defend More Than One Scorer

Charlotte is 1-0 overall and 0-0 at home after beating Brooklyn 110-103 on Wednesday. The Hornets’ opener produced 44 fewer combined points than Atlanta’s game, which is a useful reminder that Friday’s pace and scoring are not settled by the Hawks’ result. Charlotte has already won without needing a scoring race. In its home opener, keeping Atlanta out of transition would give the Hornets a better chance to dictate what kind of game develops.

Allowing 103 points at Brooklyn was a positive start, but Atlanta presents a different test. The Hawks scored from three, reached the line repeatedly and received useful creation from their frontcourt. Charlotte needs to defend without sending Atlanta into another parade of free throws. At the other end, the Hornets can make Atlanta pay for overly aggressive help by moving the ball to the next shooter. The question is whether that offense can produce consistently enough to match a team that just put up 132.

Grayson Allen led Charlotte with 21 points and made five of eight three-pointers. Naz Reid added 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, providing both finishing and playmaking. Their combined production is a reason to take Charlotte’s offense seriously even after a relatively modest team total. Kon Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams missed the opener, according to the team’s earlier availability update. Friday’s official submission was still pending in the report used here, so those opening-night absences should not automatically be treated as confirmed absences for this game.

Three Matchups Worth Watching

Matchup Why It Matters
Atlanta’s perimeter shooting against Charlotte’s closeouts The Hawks need useful outside chances if the Hornets reduce their opportunities at the rim and foul line.
Charlotte’s ball movement against Atlanta’s help defense Reid’s passing and Allen’s shooting give the Hornets ways to punish unnecessary defensive rotations.
Turnovers and defensive fouls Lost possessions could hurt Atlanta’s cover, while repeated free throws would strengthen the over.

Atlanta Hawks vs Charlotte Hornets Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Atlanta Hawks -2.5

I’ll lay the 2.5 with Atlanta. The Hawks showed several ways to score at Orlando, and Johnson’s rebounding and passing give them something to use when their jumpers stop falling. That matters against a Charlotte team that opened with a better defensive result. Atlanta does not have to reproduce 132 points to cover this number, but it does need to cut down the mistakes that kept Orlando involved. Charlotte’s home floor, Reid’s creation and Allen’s shooting are legitimate reasons the Hornets could win outright. A difficult shooting night would expose Atlanta’s defensive concerns quickly. I still prefer the Hawks to find enough offense late to win by more than a basket. My projection is Atlanta 119, Charlotte 114.

Total Pick: Over 227.5

The over is my stronger preference. Atlanta allowed 125 points in its opener, and Charlotte has useful scoring options even while its availability picture needs clarification. My expectation is that the Hornets contribute enough offense to make the Hawks keep attacking throughout the fourth quarter. We do not need another 257-point Atlanta game; a 119-114 finish gets this over with room to spare. The counterargument is Charlotte’s 110-103 opener, which showed a much more restrained scoring environment. Fewer free throws for Atlanta or weaker perimeter shooting at either end could bring this below the number. I’m taking the over because I expect the matchup to produce more scoring than Charlotte’s first game without requiring Atlanta’s opening-night pace of production.

Final Prediction
