San Antonio visits Portland at Moda Center on Saturday at 10:00 p.m. ET. Portland-area coverage includes KUNP and BlazerVision. The Spurs are favored by 4.5, with a total of 227.5. San Antonio played at Sacramento Friday, and Portland returns from facing the Lakers. I lean San Antonio outright, but I want Portland with the points. See more of our NBA picks.
San Antonio Has the Best Interior Player in the Game
The Spurs were 6-2 overall and 2-0 on the road entering Friday’s Sacramento game. They beat Dallas 112-111 on Wednesday. That’s a useful reminder for this spread: San Antonio can make the decisive plays without opening much of a margin.
San Antonio averaged 116.9 points and allowed 108.6 before Friday. The Spurs can make Portland think twice about challenging the rim, then get into their own offense without needing to run on every rebound. They’ll still have to stay attached to Portland’s shooters when the ball comes out of the paint.
Victor Wembanyama scored 52 against Dallas. Portland can try to make him give up the ball before he gets a comfortable look. That only works if the Blazers rebound after forcing a miss and avoid losing cutters when the second defender arrives.
Portland Can Keep Pressure on San Antonio From the Perimeter
The Trail Blazers were 6-1 overall and 1-1 at home before Friday’s Lakers game. They beat Phoenix 132-119 on Wednesday. Saturday is a different assignment because San Antonio has been better at taking away easy points inside than Phoenix has.
Portland averaged 121.9 points and allowed 110.7 in its first seven games. The Blazers don’t need to hit that scoring average to cover +4.5. They need to get good looks without repeatedly driving into San Antonio’s rim protection. Quick decisions after the first pass are more useful here than dribbling into traffic.
Damian Lillard scored 25 against Phoenix, while Deni Avdija had 21 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds. Donovan Clingan added 24. Those are three distinct ways to attack the matchup. With Ja Morant and Shaedon Sharpe listed out in the early snapshot, Lillard and Avdija are especially important to keeping Portland’s offense organized.

San Antonio Spurs vs Portland Trail Blazers Picks and Prediction
Spread Pick: Portland Trail Blazers +4.5
I give San Antonio a narrow edge to win because of Wembanyama’s impact inside. Portland has enough creation with Lillard and Avdija to keep the margin tight, and Clingan gives it a chance to finish defensive possessions. The spread can get away from Portland if it turns the ball over or starts settling for contested threes. At +4.5, I’m taking the home side.
Total Pick: Under 227.5
Portland’s early scoring average makes this the total I’m least eager to chase. San Antonio can take away some of the easy interior scoring that helped Portland put up 132 at Phoenix, and the Blazers can slow this game down if they keep the Spurs off the offensive glass. Free throws or a hot three-point stretch are the biggest risks. I project San Antonio 113, Portland 111.
Final Picks: Portland Trail Blazers +4.5 and Under 227.5.
