Dallas Mavericks vs Houston Rockets Picks and Predictions for Wednesday October 21 2026

Dallas opens its season Wednesday at Toyota Center against a Houston team looking to turn regular-season success into something more. Kyrie Irving’s return gives the Mavericks another proven creator alongside Cooper Flagg, but Houston’s defense and rebounding make this a difficult first assignment. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET, with regional coverage on Space City Home Network and KFAA/WFAA. Our reference numbers are Houston -8.5 and a total of 230.5. I’m taking the Rockets and the under.

Dallas Gets Irving Back, but Houston Will Make Him Work

Dallas finished 26-56 last season and went 10-30 in true road games, excluding its neutral-site game. The Mavericks split four meetings with Houston, with the home team winning each time. Irving’s return changes the offensive outlook considerably. Dallas should have a better answer when its initial action gets stopped, although a returning guard and a young centerpiece still need to establish how they share the difficult possessions against a physical defense.

The Mavericks averaged 114.1 points and allowed 119.6 last season. Their 34.4% three-point shooting also left opponents room to bring help toward the basket. Dallas needs to make Houston defend the whole floor Wednesday. If the Rockets can crowd the lane without paying for it outside, the Mavericks could spend too many possessions trying to finish through length. Getting a clean first attempt matters, too. Houston is a difficult opponent to chase down after an empty trip, especially when its own misses can become another scoring opportunity.

Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists across 70 games as a rookie. Those assists matter here because Houston can make the first scoring option uncomfortable. Flagg needs to recognize the help and find the next opening. Irving scored 17 points in his October 11 preseason return against Houston, an encouraging first step after his long absence rather than proof that his regular workload is settled. Preliminary listings have Dereck Lively II dealing with a foot issue and Santi Aldama with a knee issue. Their availability could affect Dallas’s ability to defend the interior without overworking its remaining big men.

Houston Can Win the Possession Battle

Houston went 52-30 last season and finished 30-11 at Toyota Center. The Rockets then lost to the Lakers in the first round. That leaves them with something to prove, but Wednesday’s handicap starts with the things they already did well. Houston generally made opponents work for their offense at home, and Dallas arrives with questions about its available frontcourt and how quickly its returning creator can find his rhythm.

The Rockets allowed 110.0 points per game and averaged 48.1 rebounds last season. Their opponents collected only 39.5 rebounds per game. Those figures show how Houston can build a lead without needing an exceptional shooting night: force a difficult attempt, finish the defensive possession and give its own offense another chance when necessary. Dallas cannot afford to defend well for most of the shot clock and then surrender a putback. That would make every possession feel longer and increase the pressure on its offense.

Kevin Durant averaged 26.0 points and shot 41.3% from three across 78 games last season. Alperen Sengun added 20.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists in 72 appearances. Sengun’s passing makes sending extra help a difficult decision, while Durant can finish a possession when Dallas prevents the first opportunity. Amen Thompson also contributed 18.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, giving Houston another way to pressure the rim and extend possessions. The preliminary October 20 listing showed no Houston injuries, although that does not establish the final rotation or unrestricted workloads for every player.

Irving and Flagg against Houston’s perimeter pressure Dallas needs good decisions after the first scoring opportunity disappears.
Sengun against Dallas’s available centers Interior scoring and passing could force the Mavericks to bring costly extra help.
Houston’s rebounding against Dallas’s defensive glass Repeated possessions would make it harder for the underdog to stay connected.
Dallas’s outside shooting Making Houston respect the perimeter is essential to creating room inside.

Historical scoring averages provide context rather than a standalone forecast. Irving’s return and the final frontcourt availability are important adjustments.

Dallas Mavericks vs Houston Rockets Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Houston Rockets -8.5

I’ll lay 8.5 with Houston. The Rockets have a direct way to make this uncomfortable: challenge Dallas’s initial offense, control the glass and keep testing its available big men through Sengun. Durant supplies a reliable scoring option when the Mavericks defend the first action properly. Irving is the strongest reason to hesitate. His shot creation could keep Dallas close through a stretch where the offense otherwise stalls, and Flagg gives him a capable partner. A late Dallas scoring run is another concern with a spread this size. I still expect Houston’s rebounding and defensive pressure to create enough extra opportunities for a double-digit win. My projection is Rockets 118, Mavericks 107.

Total Pick: Under 230.5

Houston’s defense is the main reason I prefer the under. Dallas should improve offensively with Irving, but this is a demanding place to assume everything works immediately. The Rockets can make the Mavericks use time and multiple actions to find an acceptable attempt. Houston also has reason to work through Sengun and favorable interior matchups rather than force an early perimeter shot. Offensive rebounds are the biggest concern because they can rescue inefficient possessions and add points without much time coming off the clock. Irving finding his shooting touch immediately would hurt as well. I still have Dallas struggling to supply its share of a game that clears 230.5. The projected total is 225, making the under my stronger preference.
