KIA earned the right to open this series at home by beating LG in the regular-season finale. Now the Twins get another shot. LG visits Gwangju-KIA Champions Field on Saturday, October 17, for Game 1 of the KBO Semi-Playoff, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. KST, or 1 a.m. ET.
My early preference is KIA at a modest moneyline price. The Tigers offer the stronger combination of scoring and run prevention, but this remains a provisional preview. The starting pitchers and reliable sportsbook prices were not confirmed during the independent recheck. The pitching comparison below examines rotation candidates, not announced starters. The preliminary forecast does not justify treating this as a cold-weather under. A warm afternoon is a meaningful difference from an October evening game.

| Latest result | Beat Doosan 4-1 | Beat LG 4-2 |
KIA scored 46 more runs and hit 38 more home runs. LG’s advantage is getting aboard: the Twins drew 52 more walks and finished with the higher on-base percentage. Those are different offensive strengths, and neither lineup needs a string of singles to create trouble.
The Tigers won nine of sixteen regular-season meetings. That supports the home side without suggesting this was a one-sided rivalry.
Starting-Pitcher Analysis
KIA Rotation Candidate: James Naile
Naile is a pitcher worth examining for the opener, but his assignment has not been verified. His reported final regular-season line was 13-7 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 156 strikeouts over 183 innings. He issued 38 walks and recorded twenty quality starts.
That workload matters. Naile averaged nearly six innings across 31 starts, giving KIA a realistic path to its preferred relievers without needing five pitchers to navigate the middle innings. His approximately 4.11 strikeouts per walk also indicates that the control was more than merely adequate.
Naile held LG scoreless through six innings in a September 26 victory. That is useful matchup evidence, not a guarantee he repeats it. His full-season results are the stronger reason to like him.
LG Rotation Candidate: Im Chan-kyu
Im is another rotation candidate, not a confirmed Game 1 starter. He finished 15-7 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 102 strikeouts over 169⅔ innings. His fifteen victories look attractive, but they should not obscure the difference in underlying performance.
He allowed 187 hits and struck out approximately 5.41 hitters per nine innings. Against a KIA lineup with 174 home runs, allowing frequent contact leaves less room for mistakes in location.
Im started LG’s October 12 finale, making him a plausible option on regular rest Saturday. That availability does not establish the assignment. Carlos Carrasco, meanwhile, started the October 14 Wild Card victory and should not simply be carried forward as the projected opener.

If these pitchers are announced, KIA would hold the clearer starting-pitching advantage. A different pairing requires a fresh price assessment.
LG Twins: Advancing Quickly Was Important
LG finished fourth at 78-65-1, then eliminated Doosan with a 4-1 victory Wednesday. Ending the Wild Card round immediately prevented another elimination game and preserved two full off days before Saturday’s opener. The Twins have to travel, but describing them as worn down would overstate the situation.
Their offense produced 723 runs with a .351 on-base percentage. The walks are important against KIA because the Twins do not possess the Tigers’ overall home-run production. Extending innings and putting runners aboard ahead of the middle order is their most practical way to close that power gap.
Austin Dean remains the central threat after batting .331 with 41 home runs, 127 RBIs and a 1.062 OPS. He supplied the opening two-run homer in the Wild Card victory. Saturday’s batting order and updated Semi-Playoff roster were not verified, so Wednesday’s lineup should not be presented as a confirmed Game 1 order.
KIA Tigers: More Power, More Ways to Separate
KIA finished 79-63-2 and secured third place by defeating LG 4-2 on October 12. That result gave the Tigers four full off days before the Semi-Playoff opener. They also avoided having to expose their rotation and bullpen in the Wild Card round.
The Tigers averaged 5.34 runs and posted a .782 OPS. Their reported pitching splits included a 4.18 starting ERA and 3.45 relief ERA, providing a stronger foundation than simply asking the offense to win a slugfest. KIA’s 769 runs scored against 664 allowed produced a plus-105 run differential.
Kim Do-yeong supplied 45 home runs, 118 RBIs and 120 runs, batting .308 with a .413 on-base percentage and 1.060 OPS. He also homered against LG in the finale. His ability to reach base and punish mistakes is a major reason KIA is my preferred side, although the final lineup and availability report still require confirmation.
Lineup and Offensive Comparison
| Category | LG Twins | KIA Tigers | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batting average | .264 | .271 | KIA |
| On-base percentage | .351 | .347 | LG |
| Slugging percentage | .401 | .435 | KIA |

| Walks | 567 | 515 | LG |
| Featured hitter | Austin Dean | Kim Do-yeong | Both dangerous |
| Featured hitter OPS | 1.062 | 1.060 | Essentially even |
| Confirmed Game 1 lineup | Pending | Pending | Unresolved |
The individual stars are closely matched offensively. KIA’s advantage comes from the broader team power numbers, not from pretending LG lacks a hitter capable of deciding the game.
Bullpen Comparison
| Category | LG Twins | KIA Tigers |
|---|---|---|
| Latest verified relief performance | Three scoreless innings against Doosan | Bullpen protected 4-2 finale victory |
| Reported season relief ERA | Conflicting figures; withheld | 3.45 |
| Full off days before Game 1 | Two | Four |
| Semi-Playoff roster availability | Not fully verified | Not fully verified |
| Preliminary assessment | Encouraging latest performance | Stronger established statistical case |
LG’s bullpen handled its Wild Card assignment, but one successful night does not erase availability questions. Conversely, there is no reason to assume those relievers will still be fatigued Saturday.
KIA’s rest and reported relief ERA support the Tigers. Individual bullpen roles and injury status remain necessary checks before upgrading that advantage.
Previous-Game Context
Carrasco gave LG six innings of one-run pitching against Doosan, allowing four hits and one walk. The relievers completed the final three innings without allowing a run. LG won without needing an extended extra-inning effort.
KIA’s latest game was its 4-2 victory over LG on October 12. The Tigers scored twice in the eighth inning to settle the third-place race. That direct result matters, but it should complement the season-long comparison rather than replace it.

Keys to the Game
LG Twins
- Put runners aboard ahead of Dean.
- Avoid giving KIA’s power hitters extra opportunities through walks.
- Receive enough innings from the starter to preserve favorable relief matchups.
- Carry Wednesday’s clean defensive performance into Gwangju.
KIA Tigers
- Make LG earn its baserunners.
- Turn the team power advantage into extra-base hits with runners aboard.
- Keep the game close enough for the bullpen advantage to matter.
- Avoid treating home field and rest as substitutes for execution.
LG Twins vs KIA Tigers Picks and Prediction
Side Pick: KIA Tigers Moneyline — Provisional Best Bet
Confidence grade: B-, pending starters
KIA is my choice at -125 or better. The Tigers scored more, showed substantially greater team power and won the regular-season series 9-7. Their pitching profile and preparation time provide additional support. The counterargument is LG’s plate discipline, Dean’s production and a Wild Card victory that preserved its pitching resources. If Naile faces Im, the current preference has a firmer statistical foundation. Until the pairing is confirmed, this is a watchlist selection rather than an active wager. Pass at -130 or worse without stronger verified matchup evidence.
Total Pick: Under 9.5 Runs
Confidence grade: C+, pending starters and weather
Under 9.5 at -110 or better is the secondary lean. KIA’s run prevention and the opportunity for both clubs to reset their pitching staffs support a competitive game around nine runs. The danger is straightforward: both lineups have major power threats, and the early forecast calls for a warm afternoon. Missing wind information also limits confidence. Pass at 8.5, pass if either team announces a bullpen game, and reassess if a meaningful wind out develops.
Betting Ranges and Pass Thresholds
| Market | Target | Pass threshold or condition |
|---|---|---|
| KIA moneyline | -125 or better | -130 or worse without new supporting evidence |
| Under 9.5 | -110 or better | Worse than -110 |
| Lower total | No current recommendation | Pass at 8.5 |
| Starting pitchers | Verify both assignments | No wager before confirmation |
| Weather | Verify wind, gusts and rain probability | Reassess total if conditions materially change |
Final Prediction
KIA has the stronger full-season case, but LG is arriving with its season intact and enough recovery time to compete. I expect the Tigers’ additional power to make the difference in a close opener.
Final side pick: KIA moneyline at -125 or better — provisional best bet
Final total pick: Under 9.5 at -110 or better
