Stephen Curry is expected to play Wednesday when Golden State opens its season against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. That is welcome news for the Warriors after his ankle scare, but their available rotation still has significant holes. Los Angeles begins a new season built around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, with LeBron James having departed for Philadelphia. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. Our reference numbers are Lakers -6.5 and a total of 234.5. I’m backing Los Angeles and the under.

Golden State Needs More Than Curry’s Availability
Golden State finished 37-45 last season, including 15-26 on the road. The Warriors lost three of four meetings with the Lakers, although they did split the two games played in Los Angeles. Their offense still has the threat that can change a game quickly, but Wednesday’s concern is sustaining productive possessions around Curry. Los Angeles should be prepared to make the next available Warrior take responsibility for a decision.
The Warriors averaged 114.6 points and allowed 115.2 last season. They committed 15.7 turnovers per game, a problem that becomes more significant when the rotation is missing established options. Golden State’s movement can create confusion, but the passes have to arrive on time. An ambitious attempt through traffic that gets intercepted gives the Lakers a chance to attack before the defense is organized. The Warriors need their cutting and screening to produce advantages without treating every narrow opening as a pass that must be attempted.
Curry averaged 26.6 points and made 4.4 three-pointers per game across 43 appearances last season. He practiced fully Monday after hurting his ankle Sunday and is expected to play. His final workload still matters. Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody are sidelined with knee injuries, while Kristaps Porzingis remains out with a health issue. Brandin Podziemski has also been dealing with a back problem. Those absences and uncertainties affect scoring, ball handling and the available defensive matchups. Curry being on the floor helps considerably, but it doesn’t replace everything the missing players provide.
Los Angeles Can Keep Asking the Next Defensive Question
The Lakers went 53-29 last season and finished 28-13 at home. They eliminated Houston in the first round before losing to Oklahoma City. With James now in Philadelphia, this is a different offensive arrangement, but Doncic and Reaves give Los Angeles two established creators. The Lakers should have opportunities to make Golden State defend successive actions instead of allowing one good contest to settle the possession.
Los Angeles shot 50.2% from the field and averaged 116.3 points last season. The Lakers allowed 114.6, so there is no reason to assume they can coast defensively. Curry can punish a late exchange or a defender who loses track of him after giving up the ball. Los Angeles needs to communicate through screens and finish the possession with a rebound. Its best offensive opportunity may come after doing that work, when Doncic can identify a favorable matchup before the Warriors arrange their preferred coverage.
Doncic averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists in 64 games last season. Reaves contributed 23.3 points and 5.5 assists across 51 appearances. That second creator matters if Golden State sends extra attention toward Doncic; Reaves can attack the next opening rather than simply return the ball and restart. Collin Sexton has carried a lower-leg-related day-to-day designation. Preliminary listings have also included Jarred Vanderbilt, Adou Thiero, Cameron Carr and Bronny James. The Lakers’ depth still needs confirmation, even though their principal scoring combination is in a better position than Golden State’s depleted group.

The Matchups Behind the Picks
| Matchup | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Curry moving through Los Angeles’s coverage | The Lakers need to defend him after the first pass rather than relax when he gives up the ball. |
| Doncic and Reaves against Golden State’s available defenders | Multiple creators can force the Warriors to defend a second advantage within the same possession. |
| Golden State’s secondary ball handling | Pressure on Curry becomes more effective if teammates cannot convert the openings it creates. |
| Turnovers leading to transition opportunities | Easy baskets could threaten the under and help either team build a quick run. |

Golden State Warriors vs Los Angeles Lakers Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Los Angeles Lakers -6.5
I’m laying 6.5 with the Lakers. Doncic and Reaves give Los Angeles two ways to keep attacking a Golden State rotation missing important defenders and secondary scorers. The Lakers don’t need to stop Curry completely. They need to make his opportunities difficult and avoid letting the rest of the available group turn defensive attention into easy baskets. Curry’s shooting is the strongest argument against the pick; a few quick threes can erase a lead that took several minutes to build. Los Angeles also has to establish its own new offensive responsibilities after James’s departure. Even with those concerns, I prefer the Lakers’ available creation over four quarters. My projection is Los Angeles 117, Golden State 109.
Total Pick: Under 234.5
The under is my stronger preference. Golden State is missing several players who can finish or create a productive possession, and Curry’s expected availability doesn’t automatically mean an unrestricted workload. Los Angeles should have stretches where it makes somebody else produce the shot. The Lakers can also work through Doncic’s matchup reads rather than force the game into a constant sprint. There is an obvious danger in backing an under involving Curry and Doncic: either can make difficult shots often enough to overwhelm sound defensive possessions. Turnovers that become immediate baskets would also damage the argument. I still expect Golden State’s depleted rotation to produce enough empty trips to hold this below 234.5. The projected 226 points leave a reasonable cushion.
