Minnesota visits Miami on Wednesday in an opener featuring two of the offseason’s biggest additions. LaMelo Ball joins Anthony Edwards in the Timberwolves’ backcourt, while Giannis Antetokounmpo begins his regular-season run with the Heat. Tipoff at Kaseya Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Miami gets the home floor, but Minnesota has enough offensive creation to make this competitive throughout. Our betting numbers are Timberwolves +1.5 and a total of 243.5.

Minnesota Can Share the Creation Burden
Minnesota finished 49-33 last season and went 23-18 on the road. The Timberwolves also won both regular-season meetings with Miami. Those results provide background rather than a ready-made forecast because the personnel have changed substantially. Minnesota’s new backcourt gives it a different way to initiate offense, while Miami now presents a much different interior scoring threat.
Edwards averaged 28.8 points last season. Ball arrives after averaging 20.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds across 72 games for Charlotte. The appeal is easy to see: Edwards shouldn’t have to create the first advantage on every possession. Ball can deliver the ball earlier, move the defense and give Edwards opportunities to attack a defender who is already adjusting. Minnesota should be harder to predict when the two are making decisions together rather than taking turns watching the other work.
There will be a defensive cost if the Timberwolves get careless. An ambitious pass that misses its target can give Antetokounmpo open floor, and that is a much harder problem than defending him against an organized group. Donte DiVincenzo has been listed out with an Achilles injury, removing a perimeter option from the rotation. Minnesota needs the available guards to communicate through screens and stay attached to shooters without leaving the interior defense to solve every breakdown.
Miami Has a New Interior Force, With Availability to Monitor
Miami went 43-39 last season and was considerably stronger at home, finishing 26-15 at Kaseya Center. That supports favoring the Heat on their floor. It doesn’t settle how quickly this particular roster will fit together. Bringing in Antetokounmpo changes who draws help, where teammates should stand and how the offense should respond when opponents build a wall near the basket.
Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 36 games for Milwaukee last season. His ability to attack the paint gives Miami a direct way to put pressure on Minnesota’s defense. The Heat need the surrounding movement to match that pressure. A timely cut or an immediate extra pass could turn a crowded drive into a good shot. Standing still would allow Minnesota to bring help without having to make as many difficult decisions afterward.
Bam Adebayo’s status is a major part of the final assessment. The October 20 preliminary injury listing included Adebayo with a groin issue, Pelle Larsson with an illness and Dru Smith with a calf issue as day-to-day. Those listings do not confirm their game availability. Adebayo’s condition matters to Miami’s defensive flexibility, rebounding and ability to connect possessions offensively. This preview assumes Antetokounmpo plays; a major restriction involving either frontcourt centerpiece would warrant another look at both selections.

The Matchups Behind the Picks
| Matchup | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Edwards attacking after Ball creates movement | Minnesota can make Miami defend more than one creator within the same possession. |
| Antetokounmpo against Minnesota’s interior help | Paint pressure could create fouls, close finishes and open perimeter opportunities. |
| Minnesota’s passing against Miami’s transition game | Careless turnovers could bypass the Timberwolves’ set defense entirely. |
| Adebayo’s availability | His condition could change Miami’s rebounding, coverage options and offensive connections. |
Minnesota Timberwolves vs Miami Heat Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves +1.5
I’m taking Minnesota in what looks close to a coin flip. Ball gives the Timberwolves another way to organize a difficult possession, while Edwards supplies the scoring threat that can keep Miami from committing all its attention to the ball handler. That combination is useful late, when the first action gets defended and somebody has to create a second opportunity.
Miami has a strong response. Antetokounmpo can make the Timberwolves defend physically, draw help and put important defenders in foul trouble. The Heat’s home performance also deserves respect. I have Miami winning by a point, which makes this a narrow spread preference rather than a comfortable cushion. Minnesota +1.5 covers that result, but a move to +1 would turn the same projection into a push. I would not carry this selection over automatically if Minnesota became the favorite.
Total Pick: Under 243.5
The total is the stronger preference. Both teams have exciting additions, but 243.5 requires those changes to produce a very productive combined scoring night immediately. New creation can lead to better shots. It can also lead to timing problems, misplaced passes and possessions where teammates hesitate because their responsibilities have changed.
Last season’s venue splits offer useful context: Miami’s home games averaged 241.8 combined points, while Minnesota’s road games averaged 239.4. Neither figure predicts Wednesday’s result, but both sit below this number. The additions make those averages less reliable, which is why the argument also depends on Minnesota getting back defensively and forcing Miami to execute through a set defense.
The danger is obvious. Ball can accelerate the game, Edwards can score in bunches, and Antetokounmpo can generate points before the defense is organized. An early whistle could also put both teams at the line repeatedly. I still expect enough possessions where each offense has to work for its shot to keep this below 243.5. My projection is Miami 120, Minnesota 119.
