Houston +6.5 is our original recorded selection. A smaller spread reduces the cushion and should be evaluated at the number actually available.

Houston Can Stay Close Without Repeating Its Opening Score

Houston enters 1-0 overall and 0-0 on the road after Wednesday’s 128-110 home victory over Dallas. The Rockets took charge by outscoring the Mavericks 38-12 in the second quarter. That kind of separation gives a team room to survive a less convincing stretch later, but San Antonio is unlikely to offer the same mistakes without resistance. Houston needs to maintain its defensive attention when the game stays close.

The Rockets benefited from Dallas’ 21 turnovers, which became 32 Houston points. They also scored 29 fast-break points. Those opportunities made the offense’s job easier, and Friday should demand more execution against a set defense. Houston does not need another 128-point night to cover this spread. Protecting the ball, completing defensive possessions and finding useful attempts late in the shot clock would give the underdog a practical way to remain within a few baskets.

Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. each scored 30 points against Dallas. Alperen Sengun added 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, giving Houston production and creation from the middle. The injury report could affect the supporting minutes. Steven Adams is questionable with right calf tightness and soreness, while Reed Sheppard is questionable with a left knee contusion and bone bruise on the NBA’s October 22, 6:45 p.m. ET report. Adams’ rebounding and Sheppard’s perimeter minutes would matter if either is unavailable.

San Antonio Needs a More Efficient Start

San Antonio is 0-1 overall and 0-1 in designated home games after Tuesday’s 116-104 loss to Oklahoma City. Friday is another designated home game, although it takes place in Austin rather than at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs fell behind by 21 at halftime against the Thunder and could not finish the recovery. They have had an additional day between games compared with Houston, but the extra preparation needs to produce better early possessions.

The Spurs made just 14 of 48 shots in the first half against Oklahoma City. That left too much work for the second half and allowed the Thunder to control the game’s terms. Houston can also punish careless possessions, so San Antonio needs to create closer attempts and avoid letting a missed shot become an easy basket at the other end. Defensively, the Spurs must stay aware of Sengun’s passing. Sending help without covering the next option could give Houston clean perimeter opportunities.

Victor Wembanyama finished the opener with 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks despite making only one of 13 field-goal attempts. Stephon Castle supplied 24 points and seven rebounds. More ordinary shooting from Wembanyama would change the offensive picture, but the perimeter rotation has uncertainty. De’Aaron Fox is questionable with a right wrist sprain, and Keldon Johnson is questionable with a mouth laceration. Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance are out. Fox’s status is particularly relevant to San Antonio’s ability to organize possessions and create penetration.

Where This Game Gets Decided

Matchup Why It Matters
Sengun’s passing against San Antonio’s help defense Houston needs good decisions when the Spurs take away its first scoring option.
Wembanyama’s finishing against Houston’s interior coverage Better shot conversion would make San Antonio harder to defend than in its opener.
Fox’s availability His wrist injury could affect San Antonio’s perimeter creation and rotation.
Turnovers and transition chances A cleaner game would help Houston stay close and strengthen the under.

Houston Rockets vs San Antonio Spurs Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Houston Rockets +6.5 — Original Slate Selection

Houston +6.5 remains our recorded slate pick. The Rockets have several credible scoring options, and Sengun’s passing gives them a way to respond when San Antonio sends help. They can stay competitive without repeating the transition production they received against Dallas. The Spurs deserve to be favored because Wembanyama can affect possessions even when he is not scoring efficiently, and his offense should not be judged solely by a one-of-13 opener. Houston’s questionable players also make the reserve minutes uncertain. I’m projecting San Antonio 113, Houston 110. That puts Houston inside both the original +6.5 and the updated +5.5, although the smaller number offers less protection.

Total Pick: Under 226.5

I’m leaning under because I expect fewer easy baskets than Houston received in its opener. San Antonio needs to protect its possessions after its difficult start against Oklahoma City, and Houston should face more resistance when attacking the basket. Fox’s uncertain status also creates the possibility of less efficient Spurs offense, although the under does not depend entirely on him sitting. The counterargument is a Wembanyama scoring rebound combined with Houston’s balanced production. If the Rockets turn this into another transition game, 226.5 could be too low. Our projection of 223 offers a modest cushion, with enough contested possessions to keep the scoring manageable.
