New York Knicks vs Boston Celtics Picks and Predictions for Friday October 23 2026

New York and Boston meet Friday at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, with each looking to clean up a different kind of opening-night loss. The Knicks could not find enough offense against Philadelphia. The Celtics built a big lead at Detroit and then watched it disappear. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on Prime Video. Boston is favored by 2.5 points, with the total used here at 224.5. I’m taking New York with the points and leaning under.

New York Has to Turn Rebounds Into Better Possessions

New York is 0-1 overall and 0-0 on the road after losing 106-100 to Philadelphia on Tuesday. The defending champions collected 53 rebounds but could not turn that work into enough scoring. They also won three of last season’s four regular-season meetings with Boston. That history is useful background, although personnel changes mean it cannot settle Friday’s matchup. The immediate task is simpler: generate better attempts and avoid wasting the possessions the Knicks earn.

The Knicks shot 37.2% from the field in their opener and committed 15 turnovers. Those two numbers explain why the rebounding advantage did not become a win. Last season, New York averaged 116.5 points and allowed 110.1, a plus-6.4 scoring margin. That defensive record is a reason to trust the Knicks to remain competitive while their offense settles down. Boston can punish mistakes from outside, so New York needs to get organized quickly and avoid leaving shooters open while recovering from a turnover.

Jalen Brunson scored 21 points against Philadelphia but made only six of 19 shots. Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Andre Drummond supplied 12 points and 14 boards. New York has useful interior production available; the question is whether its perimeter creation becomes more efficient. The NBA’s October 22, 4:45 p.m. ET report listed Jaden Akins, Kevin McCullar Jr. and Tyler Nickel as questionable for G League two-way reasons. No injury absence was listed for the established rotation in that report.

Boston Needs More Than a Strong Start

Boston enters 0-1 overall and 0-0 at home after Tuesday’s 121-113 defeat at Detroit. The Celtics led by 22 and still held a 99-89 advantage with a little more than eight minutes remaining. Detroit then put together a 23-0 run. That is a painful way to lose, but it also identifies the problem clearly. Boston showed it could create separation. It did not maintain its execution when Detroit increased the pressure.

The Celtics made 17 three-pointers and recorded 28 assists in the opener. Those are encouraging offensive figures, particularly with a changed rotation. The concern is that they still allowed 121 points and finished with only 39 rebounds. Boston’s defense allowed 107.2 points per game last season, so Tuesday was well above that previous standard. Against New York, the Celtics need to complete stops with rebounds. Making the Knicks miss once will not be enough if Towns and Drummond keep extending possessions.

Paul George scored 38 points in his Boston debut, making 12 of 21 shots and seven of 12 threes. Jayson Tatum had 13 points and 11 assists but shot six of 23, including zero of seven from outside. Boston does not need another 38-point performance from George if Tatum converts a more ordinary share of his chances. That is the strongest offensive argument for the home favorite. Boston had not submitted its official game injury report in the October 22, 4:45 p.m. ET release, so the final rotation still requires confirmation.

Three Matchups Worth Watching

Matchup Why It Matters
New York’s rebounding against Boston’s defensive glass Extra attempts could keep the road underdog close even during another uneven shooting night.
Boston’s perimeter shooting against New York’s rotations The Celtics made 17 threes Tuesday and can change the game quickly from outside.
Brunson and Tatum’s shot conversion Both took substantial shot volume in their openers without shooting efficiently.

New York Knicks vs Boston Celtics Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: New York Knicks +2.5

I’ll take New York with the points. The Knicks rebounded well enough to stay involved against Philadelphia despite shooting just 37.2%, and that gives them a workable route here if Boston again struggles to finish defensive possessions. I also expect New York to be more efficient than it was Tuesday, although that is a projection rather than something one game can prove. Boston has a strong counterargument: Tatum can shoot much better, George has already shown he can score in this offense, and the Celtics are at home. I still see a game that stays close enough for the points to matter. My projection is New York 114, Boston 110, with the Knicks’ rebounding helping them survive Boston’s scoring runs.

Total Pick: Under 224.5

This is the smaller preference. Last season’s average combined game scores produce a basic midpoint of 224.35, almost exactly the total used here. There is no meaningful historical cushion to claim. I’m leaning under because I expect more deliberate possessions late, with New York trying to control its turnovers and Boston concentrating on avoiding another defensive collapse. The threats are substantial: Tatum and Brunson could both shoot better, Boston can make threes in bunches, and New York’s offensive rebounding can create additional scoring chances. Our projection lands at 224, only half a point below the number. I would not carry this same selection automatically to a lower total.
