Charlotte and Brooklyn open their seasons Wednesday at Barclays Center, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Hornets are building their offense around a different group after trading LaMelo Ball, while Julius Randle gives the Nets another established scoring option alongside Michael Porter Jr. Charlotte’s unsettled injury situation is a major part of this matchup. Our reference numbers are Brooklyn -3.5 and a total of 219.5. I’m backing the Nets and taking the over.

Charlotte Has to Replace More Than Ball’s Scoring
Charlotte finished 44-38 last season and went 23-18 on the road. The Hornets won two of three regular-season meetings with Brooklyn. Those are good reasons to question why they are the underdog, but the roster changes matter. Ball’s departure removes the player who could create an advantage before the defense was organized. Charlotte now has to establish who makes those decisions and how the offense responds when its first option gets taken away.
The Hornets averaged 116.0 points, shot 37.8% from three and collected 46.1 rebounds per game last season. They also allowed only 111.2 points. The rebounding offers a practical route to remaining competitive Wednesday: finish defensive possessions, then find extra chances when the first offensive attempt misses. Charlotte cannot assume last season’s perimeter efficiency carries over automatically, though. The quality of the pass and the timing of the opportunity will matter when Brooklyn forces somebody else to initiate the offense.
Brandon Miller averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists across 65 games last season, making 204 three-pointers. Naz Reid arrives after averaging 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds for Minnesota. Miller gives Charlotte a scorer who can punish space, while Reid can make a defender follow him away from the basket. The concern is how much help they have. October 20 preliminary listings included Coby White with a calf issue, Kon Knueppel with a hamstring issue, Grayson Allen with a knee issue and Moussa Diabate with an elbow issue as day-to-day. Those designations do not establish who will play, but several limitations would reduce Charlotte’s ball handling, shooting and frontcourt options.
Brooklyn Has More Ways to Rescue a Difficult Possession
Brooklyn went 20-62 last season, including 12-29 at home. That record should keep anyone from treating the Nets as an established favorite. They have to demonstrate improvement on the court. Brooklyn did beat Charlotte 124-90 in the October 6 preseason meeting, but exhibition rotations and minutes make that a poor basis for expecting another comfortable result. Wednesday’s argument has to begin with the personnel and the matchup.
The Nets averaged only 105.9 points last season and shot 44.3% from the field. Adding Randle gives them a different answer when a possession becomes difficult. He can receive the ball closer to the basket, force a defender to hold his ground and make the next pass when help arrives. That should create opportunities for Porter without requiring him to manufacture every shot himself. Brooklyn still needs defensive improvement; opponents shot 49.7% against the Nets last season. Charlotte should find chances if its available players move the ball rather than settle for the first contested look.
Porter averaged 24.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in 52 games last season. Randle produced 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists across 79 games for Minnesota. That passing number is relevant against a Charlotte defense that may need extra help inside. Rookie Mikel Brown Jr. is expected to come off the bench with a minutes restriction after his ankle injury, according to pregame reporting. Brooklyn should not be counting on him to carry a full starting workload immediately. Tyler Bilodeau has also been listed out with a shoulder injury.

Four Matchups Worth Watching
| Matchup | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Randle against Charlotte’s available frontcourt | Interior pressure could force help and create better opportunities for Brooklyn’s shooters. |
| Miller receiving the ball against a moving defense | Charlotte needs to create space for its leading returning scorer. |
| Reid’s shooting against Brooklyn’s interior coverage | Pulling a defender away from the basket could open driving and rebounding opportunities. |
| Charlotte’s available guards against defensive pressure | Limited ball handling could produce empty trips and easier Brooklyn baskets. |

Charlotte Hornets vs Brooklyn Nets Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Brooklyn Nets -3.5
I’m taking Brooklyn -3.5. The Nets have two established scoring options who can attack different parts of the defense, and Randle gives them a way to generate a useful possession when the perimeter action stalls. Charlotte’s uncertain guard availability makes it harder to trust the visitors to answer consistently. That is the reason to back Brooklyn; last season’s records clearly favor the Hornets. Charlotte also has a credible counterargument through rebounding and Miller’s shooting, particularly if its injured perimeter players are available without restrictions. This selection assumes Randle and Porter retain their expected roles and Charlotte’s preparation remains affected by its availability concerns. I have Brooklyn winning 116-109. A substantially healthier Hornets rotation would reduce my confidence in laying the points.
Total Pick: Over 219.5
I like the over because this number leaves room for an uneven offensive night. Brooklyn doesn’t have to become an elite scoring team immediately. It needs Randle and Porter to produce enough reliable possessions against a Charlotte rotation that may be short of healthy options. At the other end, the Nets’ previous defensive problems give Miller and Reid a reasonable opportunity to contribute. Charlotte’s strong rebounding last season also shows how it could extend possessions when the shooting is ordinary. The danger is the Hornets struggling badly to create shots without Ball, especially if White and Knueppel cannot contribute normally. Brooklyn’s young guards could have empty stretches of their own. I still project 225 combined points, with enough opportunities near the basket and on second chances to clear 219.5.
