Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Picks and Predictions for Tuesday October 20 2026

The Knicks raise their championship banner Tuesday, then get right to work against Philadelphia at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. New York swept the Sixers in last season’s playoffs, but Philadelphia spent the summer changing the team that suffered those losses. Our betting numbers are Philadelphia +5.5 and a total of 231.5. The Knicks are my projected winner. I’m taking the points with the visitors. Make sure you check out our full NBA picks.

Philadelphia Has More Answers, but the Defense Still Has to Work

Philadelphia went 45-37 last season, including 22-19 on the road. The Sixers beat Boston in seven games before New York swept them out of the second round. That series exposed a considerable gap. Philadelphia has since added major offensive talent, so simply carrying last spring’s matchup forward would miss the point of this opener.

The Sixers averaged 115.9 points and allowed 116.1 last season. That slight negative scoring margin is why I’m cautious about assuming the new roster immediately becomes a complete team. More shot creation helps when the offense gets stuck. It doesn’t automatically improve transition coverage, defensive communication or rebounding assignments. New York is capable of testing all three.

The offseason additions should give Philadelphia more ways to attack a set defense and reduce the burden on any single possession creator. The question Tuesday is how smoothly those options fit together. A stalled possession that ends with a difficult jumper can become a transition opportunity for New York. The NBA’s October 19 morning injury report listed Philadelphia as “not yet submitted,” so this preview does not assume every rotation player has been cleared.

New York Has Earned the Benefit of the Doubt

New York finished 53-29 last season and turned that into a championship. The Knicks beat Philadelphia four straight during that run, then continued through Cleveland and San Antonio. They have the home floor and a successful foundation. That gives them a reasonable advantage against an opponent still establishing how its new pieces work together.

The Knicks averaged 116.5 points while allowing 110.1 last season, producing a scoring margin of plus-6.4. Compare that with Philadelphia’s minus-0.2, and the difference was mostly on defense. New York scored only 0.6 more points per game, but allowed 6.0 fewer. That is the strongest reason to favor the Knicks outright. They didn’t need an exceptional offensive night every time to win.

Tuesday’s defensive challenge is different from the one New York handled last spring. Philadelphia has more options for creating shots, and the Knicks will have to defend successive actions rather than load up on one threat. New York’s own offensive patience matters, too. A quick contested shot gives Philadelphia an easier chance to play before the defense gets organized. The Knicks’ official injury submission was still pending on the morning report.

Scoring Comparison Against the Total

Scoring Measure Combined Points
Philadelphia’s average game last season 232.0
New York’s average game last season 226.6
Simple average of those two figures 229.3
Betting total used 231.5

The 229.3 figure is a basic historical comparison, not a predictive model. Philadelphia’s roster changes reduce the usefulness of treating last season’s averages as a forecast.

Philadelphia Create good shots without allowing possessions to stall Get organized before New York attacks
New York Make Philadelphia defend multiple actions Limit easy baskets and force difficult half-court shots

Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Picks and Predictions

Spread Pick: Philadelphia 76ers +5.5

I trust New York more to win this game than I trust it to win comfortably. The Knicks have the better defensive baseline, the home floor and the familiarity that Philadelphia is still building. That supports favoring them. Giving the Sixers 5.5 points is a separate question. Philadelphia’s added shot creation gives it a better chance to find offense when the first action fails, and that matters late in a competitive game. The risk is that New York’s defense exposes early problems with spacing and decision-making, creating the same kind of separation we saw last spring. I’m expecting a closer game this time. Take Philadelphia +5.5; the preference becomes weaker if only +4.5 is available.

Total Pick: Under 231.5

New York’s defense is the starting point. The Knicks allowed 110.1 points per game last season, and their games averaged 226.6 combined points. Philadelphia’s games averaged 232.0, so the total is already asking for something closer to the Sixers’ old scoring environment than New York’s. I expect the Knicks to make Philadelphia work through enough half-court possessions to hold this below 231.5. The counterargument is Philadelphia’s upgraded offense, which could make those historical numbers look dated quickly. A close finish with repeated free throws is another concern. My projection still lands at 228, making the under the second selection.

Final Prediction

Selection Pick
Side Philadelphia 76ers +5.5
Total Under 231.5
Projected score New York 116, Philadelphia 112
Stronger preference Philadelphia +5.5

Final Picks: Philadelphia 76ers +5.5 and Under 231.5.
