The statistical comparisons below cover the completed 2026 Division Series only. Regular-season records are labeled separately. Three games for Tampa Bay and five for Cleveland are useful evidence, but small samples—not established expectations.
Starting Pitchers
Cleveland announced Foster Griffin as its Game 1 starter Sunday. He faces Drew Rasmussen, giving Tampa Bay the more demonstrated postseason innings advantage entering the opener.
| 2026 Postseason Statistic | Foster Griffin — Cleveland | Drew Rasmussen — Tampa Bay |
|---|---|---|
| Throws | Left-handed | Right-handed |
| Appearances / starts | 1 / 0 | 1 / 1 |
| Record | 1–0 | 1–0 |
| Innings pitched | 2⅔ | 8 |
| Earned runs | 1 | 0 |
| ERA | 3.38 | 0.00 |
| Hits allowed | 2 | 1 |
| Walks | 0 | 2 |
| Strikeouts | 7 | 10 |
| WHIP — calculated | 0.75 | 0.38 |
WHIP is calculated as hits plus walks divided by innings pitched.
Griffin’s relief appearance showed he can miss bats without giving away walks. That is encouraging, but eight recorded outs do not tell us how he will handle a lineup repeatedly. Cleveland would benefit enormously from efficient early innings; an extended first or second inning could force its manager into relief decisions earlier than planned.
Rasmussen’s eight-inning shutout against New York offers a much stronger workload reference. Tampa Bay does not need another one-hit performance to gain an advantage here. A controlled six-inning start would let the Rays choose their late-inning matchups rather than spend the evening covering an early exit. Neither starter’s tiny postseason WHIP should be treated as sustainable.
Cleveland Guardians Have Found a Way to Keep Their Season Alive
Cleveland finished the regular season 85–77, including 44–37 on the road and 41–40 at home. Its postseason record is now 3–2, with both road games producing victories. That road success matters: this is not a team that needs its own crowd to compete. The comeback also exposed two different winning routes—productive offensive innings in Chicago and a pitching-led shutout in the deciding game.
The offensive improvement needs some context. Cleveland’s postseason batting average remains modest, but its walks have kept innings alive. That makes patience more important than chasing another nine-run night. Against a staff capable of attacking the strike zone, the Guardians must distinguish hittable pitches from tempting ones; simply waiting for the opponent to lose command may not work.
The pitching gives Cleveland a legitimate opportunity to stay close. Its strikeout rate has been exceptional, but free baserunners remain the vulnerability. Against a contact-oriented opponent, walks can turn an ordinary single into a scoring opportunity. Cleveland’s best route is to keep the opening innings manageable and make Tampa Bay earn its advancement around the bases.
Postseason Hitting Comparison
| Statistic | Guardians | Rays |
|---|---|---|
| Games | 5 | 3 |
| Runs scored | 23 | 10 |
| Runs per game | 4.60 | 3.33 |
| Hits / at-bats | 34 / 160 | 20 / 96 |
| Batting average | .213 | .208 |
| On-base percentage | .330 | .255 |
| Slugging percentage | .350 | .344 |
| OPS | .680 | .599 |
| Doubles / triples | 7 / 3 | 4 / 0 |
| Home runs | 3 | 3 |
| Walks | 27 | 5 |
| Strikeouts | 37 | 18 |
| Stolen bases / caught stealing | 3 / 1 | 3 / 0 |
Cleveland’s hitting totals are supported by Baseball-Reference; Tampa Bay’s totals are supported by StatMuse. Per-game scoring is calculated from those totals.
The clearest offensive separation is getting on base, not batting average or power. Cleveland has generated more opportunities through walks. Tampa Bay has needed fewer runs because its pitching has left so little room for opponents.
Tampa Bay Rays Can Build Around Rested Pitching
Tampa Bay finished 98–64, with a 55–26 home record and 43–38 road record. The Rays enter the ALCS 3–0 this postseason, including two home victories. Their regular-season home performance provides broader support for the venue advantage than a two-game playoff sample alone.
The sweep should not be mistaken for an offensive demolition. Tampa Bay has made enough contact and delivered enough timely damage to win, but it has not consistently filled the bases. That leaves an opening for Cleveland: if the visitors limit free passes, the Rays may again have to win a tight game rather than comfortably separate.
Tampa Bay’s stronger argument is how cleanly its pitching has controlled traffic. The rest also gives its manager flexibility, although time off is not a guarantee of sharpness. The Rays can afford to respond quickly to trouble without the same recent workload concerns as Cleveland. I give them the overall advantage, but their limited offensive production makes a multi-run victory less attractive to require.
Postseason Pitching Comparison
| Statistic | Guardians | Rays |
|---|---|---|
| Innings pitched | 45 | 27 |
| Runs / earned runs allowed | 15 / 15 | 5 / 5 |
| Runs allowed per game | 3.00 | 1.67 |
| ERA | 3.00 | 1.67 |
| Hits allowed | 29 | 12 |
| Walks allowed | 21 | 7 |
| WHIP — calculated | 1.11 | 0.70 |
| Strikeouts | 75 | 31 |
| Strikeouts per nine innings — calculated | 15.00 | 10.33 |
| Walks per nine innings — calculated | 4.20 | 2.33 |
| Home runs allowed | 2 | 2 |
Team totals are from StatMuse; WHIP and per-nine rates are calculated from the listed innings, hits, walks, and strikeouts.
Cleveland has the greater swing-and-miss rate; Tampa Bay has allowed less traffic. Those are different strengths. Strikeouts can escape trouble, but preventing trouble in the first place is generally the less demanding way to protect a lead.
Matchup Factors That Matter Most
| Factor | Assessment | Betting interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Early innings | Tampa Bay has the more established starting workload | Supports Rays moneyline |
| Offensive patience | Cleveland has drawn substantially more postseason walks | Main threat to Tampa Bay’s pitching advantage |
| Contact versus strikeouts | Rays hitters face a strikeout-heavy staff | Cleveland must finish two-strike counts |
| Recent workload | Rays swept; Guardians played five games | Tampa Bay has more pitching flexibility |
| Scoring margin | Neither lineup has posted a strong postseason batting average | Prefer moneyline over Rays -1.5 |
| Total sensitivity | Seven offers protection that 6.5 does not | A seven-run finish pushes our selected total |

Cleveland Guardians vs Tampa Bay Rays Picks and Prediction
Side Pick: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline -172
Tampa Bay gets the selection because its starting-pitching workload, lower postseason traffic allowance, and rested relief options provide the clearest Game 1 advantages. Cleveland’s patient offense is the strongest counterargument: if it forces extended innings, the Rays’ advantage could narrow quickly. Nevertheless, I favor the hosts to control enough of the game to win without requiring a two-run margin. At -172, the break-even probability is approximately 63.2%, so this is a price-sensitive selection, not a bargain simply because Tampa Bay is favored. My limit is around -175; beyond that, I would pass rather than chase.
Total Pick: Under 7 (-125)
The under is my preferred betting angle. Tampa Bay’s postseason offense has been less productive than its sweep suggests, while Cleveland now faces a staff that has limited both hits and walks. The Guardians’ ability to miss bats also gives them a route to suppress scoring even if their starter does not work deep. The principal risk is an early Cleveland pitching exit followed by free passes, not outdoor weather in this indoor venue. Under 7 provides a push on a 4–3 result; I would not automatically substitute Under 6.5 at the same price. Keep the price at -125 or better.
Projected Score: Rays 4, Guardians 2
Final Picks: Tampa Bay Rays ML -172 | Under 7 (-125)
Best Bet: Under 7 (-125)
