Philadelphia’s Defense Travels
Philadelphia is 8-1 overall and 4-0 on the road. The Sixers beat Detroit 112-106 Wednesday, avenging their only loss of the season. Winning on the road against a defense that had been allowing about 100 points per game was a useful test before visiting Cleveland.
The Sixers average 111.0 points and allow 105.2. That defensive baseline gives them an answer when the offense stalls. Against Cleveland, Philadelphia needs to keep its bigs close enough to protect the rim without handing the Cavaliers open threes off the first pass.
Jaylen Brown scored 30 against Detroit. That scoring gives Philadelphia another option when the defense crowds its initial action. Adem Bona was listed doubtful on the early report. If he cannot play, Philadelphia has less room for foul trouble in its reserve frontcourt.
Cleveland Needs Stops to Make Its Offense Count
Cleveland is 4-4 overall and 3-1 at home. The Cavaliers lost 124-116 in Oklahoma City after losing 117-112 to the Thunder at home. Scoring was not the main problem in either game. They could not string together enough stops to get back in front.
The Cavaliers average 119.2 points and allow 117.1. Their offense gives them a real chance to make this a one-possession game, but the defense must hold up when Philadelphia forces a second rotation. Otherwise, the Sixers can keep answering without playing at Cleveland’s preferred pace.
Donovan Mitchell scored 27 Wednesday. He can pull defenders away from the rim and create space for cutters, but Cleveland needs more support inside if Jarrett Allen cannot play. Allen was listed questionable with a knee issue, and Peyton Watson also appeared on the early report with a hamstring issue.
76ers vs Cavaliers Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Philadelphia 76ers -1.5
Philadelphia has the better defense and has shown it can carry that defense on the road. Cleveland’s scoring and home record make this a tighter matchup than the overall records suggest. Still, the Cavaliers have struggled to finish defensive possessions, and Allen’s status matters against Philadelphia’s size. I’ll take the Sixers to win by at least a basket at -1.5.
Total Pick: Under 229.5
Cleveland can push this over if it dictates the pace, especially with the way it has scored recently. Philadelphia has allowed 105.2 per game, though, and its games have stayed under the listed total in seven of nine. I expect the Sixers to make Cleveland work longer for its shots rather than trade quick baskets all night. Projection: Philadelphia 116, Cleveland 110.
Final Picks: Philadelphia -1.5 and Under 229.5. Projected winner: Philadelphia.
