Oklahoma City Has Kept Winning Through the Absences
Oklahoma City is 4-0 overall and 1-0 on the road after Monday’s 125-114 victory over Phoenix. The Thunder responded well in their first game after losing important players against the Clippers. That deserves credit, but one successful adjustment does not make the absences disappear. Wednesday asks a thinner rotation to handle a road assignment against a team coming off a useful win.
The Thunder have averaged 111.3 points and allowed 100.8 through four games, calculated from their completed scores. Their defensive start remains the strongest reason to favor them outright. Still, those averages include lineups they cannot currently use. Oklahoma City needs to protect the ball and finish defensive possessions without depending on the same depth that supported its opening performances. Giving Dallas extra attempts would make a road cover more difficult.
Ajay Mitchell scored a career-high 30 points against Phoenix, showing he can provide more offense when his role expands. That support is important around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are out following injuries against the Clippers, while Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso are also reported unavailable Wednesday. Those absences affect scoring, perimeter coverage and interior defense. Oklahoma City still has a route to win, but it has fewer options when its first plan is not working.
Dallas Needs Flagg’s Decisions as Much as His Scoring
Dallas is 2-2 overall and 0-1 at home after Monday’s 113-109 victory at Miami. The Mavericks have won two of their last three games and now begin a stretch with more opportunities on their own floor. Their first home appearance ended in a loss to San Antonio, so home court alone is not the argument. The more useful development is finding enough organized offense to finish a competitive road game.
The Mavericks have averaged 112.5 points while allowing 116.0 through four games. That defensive allowance leaves work to do, especially against a player who can punish poor positioning as effectively as Gilgeous-Alexander. Dallas needs to keep the first drive under control and avoid unnecessary fouls. Offensively, moving the ball at the right time is more valuable than trying to attack Oklahoma City’s reputation with difficult individual shots.
Flagg produced 29 points, 11 assists and five steals against Miami. The passing is particularly relevant here because Dallas needs to turn defensive attention into good opportunities for teammates. Kyrie Irving is questionable with a knee issue, making the available shot creation uncertain. Sergio De Larrea will miss the game with a knee sprain, while Dereck Lively remains unavailable with a foot injury. The Mavericks have their own rotation problems, and this pick does not assume Irving has been cleared.

| Available frontcourt rotations | Absences at both ends could change rebounding, interior scoring and foul management. |
Oklahoma City Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks Picks and Predictions
Spread Pick: Dallas Mavericks +6
I’m taking Dallas +6 while projecting Oklahoma City to win narrowly. The Thunder have earned respect with their defense and their response Monday, but they are missing enough important players to make a comfortable road margin harder to assume. Flagg’s passing gives Dallas a practical way to attack the available coverage rather than relying entirely on difficult shooting. The concern is the Mavericks’ own availability, particularly Irving, and their ability to avoid turnovers against pressure. Gilgeous-Alexander also gives Oklahoma City the better late-possession option. I still expect Dallas to remain involved often enough to prefer six points. My projection is Thunder 114, Mavericks 110. At +5.5, the selection has less protection.
Total Pick: Under 229.5
I lean under 229.5 because Oklahoma City still has reason to make this a controlled game, and Dallas needs to value possessions against its pressure. The Thunder’s missing scorers and the Mavericks’ uncertainty around Irving also reduce confidence in a consistently efficient offensive night. The objection is that several Oklahoma City absences affect defense as well. Dallas could find easier interior opportunities, while its own coverage may give Gilgeous-Alexander too much room to operate. Free throws and turnovers would be the quickest routes to an over. My projection reaches 224, leaving a reasonable cushion, although the side is my stronger preference.
