Rhode Island Rams at UMass Minutemen 1/27/19 College Basketball Pick

UMass Minutemen LogoRhode Island is coming here for a great game with the Minutemen. The difference is the Rams actually know how to play basketball this year and the Minutemen, well, lets say that the Minutemen have yet to win a game in the A10 this season and even when they had the non-conference play the UMass squad only managed to get a total 7 wins on the season and have dropped 12 games including the A-10. For the Rams the team has a 4-2 conference schedule, but coming in overall with a great 11-7 record, which could be better, but it is a lot better than what the Minutemen have done on the season.

Rhode Island Rams Preview

Rhode Island showed that they are able to survive the defensive battles as the last game out for the Rams was a true defensive battle between the Rams and the VCU Rams. The Rhode Island squad was able to come out with the win in this game and actually managed to get a 6 point win. Obviously, Rhode Island would like to avoid a situation like that here and with some of the different game plans the Rams have it could easily pick apart the Minutemen and as long the Rams have the same type of crisp shooting they have come to expect they could easily get the win.

Jeff Dowtin has been the player the Rams have come to rely on this season as he has managed to get 16.6 points a game and 3.9 assist a game, both of which lead Rhode Island. Overall, as a team the Rhode Island squad is scoring 71.1 points a game and getting 11.6 assist a game. The Rams have managed to pull down 38.9 boards a game and out of those the Rams typically get 9.9 game from Cyril Langevine. Defensively the Rams have been playing very well by giving up only 66.3 points a game.

UMass Minutemen Preview

UMass has not had any luck this year in conference play. In fact, 2 games ago, the Minutemen played the VCU squad who battled Rhode Island to a defensive loss and the Minutemen were completely crushed in the game. The Rams defense was able to keep the Minutemen offense to 50 points and the Minutemen looked completely lost when they were playing against the Saint Bonaventure squad in the last game the Minutemen did not look any better as they ended up losing the game 65-51 and the Bonnies are not much better than the Rhode Island squad either and that will definitely make it a challenge for the Minutemen to have much of a chance in this game here.

Luwane Pipkins is the player the Minutemen have leaned on quite a bit this year and just like the Rams he leads in scoring and assists with 18.2 points and 5.3 assists per game. The Minutemen as a team are only getting 72.8 points a game and 14.4 assists per game. The Minutemen when it comes to cleaning up the glass have managed to get 34.7 a game and they are getting 5.6 a game from Rashaan Holloway. Defensively the Minutemen have struggled as they are giving up 73.3 points a game.

Rams at Minutemen Line: Rhode Island Rams -2.5 O/U 140

My Free College Basketball Pick: Rhode Island Rams -2.5

The Rams have a great defense and the Minutemen have not been able to compete with good defense’s lately and that is going to prove to be a problem for the Minutemen in this game as the offense struggles again and tries to hard to battle back. I personally see the Minutemen probably getting in foul trouble and having to substitute out quite a bit because of the fouls and that makes it even harder when facing the Rhode Island team. I look for the Rhode Island Rams to beat the UMass Minutemen and cover the spread as the Minutemen offense fails again 68-52.
